05 Mar Pirates of the Carribean comes to Kauai
I can hardly wait to run into Johnny Dep when the filming of Pirates of the Carribean–On Stranger Tides starts to film here on Kauai. Filming here should bring Kauai about $86 million dollars. Good news is that a lot of that money will go to local businesses and local people as they will hire “extras” from here. Maybe I will get to see myself on the big screen! In fact Kauai and its beauty are a magnet for Hollywood. Did the jungle scenes in Avatar look familiar? Some of those scenes were actually shot on Kauai and the actors came to Kauai to learn how to “walk in the jungle”. Other movies filmed here on Kauai include classics like South Pacific, Thorn Birds, Tropic Thunder, 6 day 7 Nights and of course, Blue Hawaii with Elvis Presley.
On a different note, the occupancies here on the south side are up over last year in January by about 27%. What we are seeing is an increase in the ‘value minded travelers’. They prefer to stay in a condominium with a kitchen then the high end hotels. The Grand Hyatt is running about 60% for January while the Kiahuna Plantation has an occupancy of 85%. With value in mind, Merrimans Restaurant in the new Kukuiula Village is offering a “kamaaina special’ for those early diners. It features soup or salad, a choice of one of three entrees, and 3 scoops of gelato for dessert for $25.00. Such a deal.
